The capital and the country’s main transport hub. Most routes either start or end here.
What is worth seeing
The Hazrati Imam complex is the religious and historical core of the city; its library holds a copy of the Uthman Quran. Chorsu is a large bazaar under a dome, the closest view of everyday city life.
Tashkent’s metro stations deserve separate attention: each has its own decoration and they are considered part of the city’s architecture.
Why it is often the starting point
International flights mostly route through Tashkent, and the rail and road network radiates from here. Trips to Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva are therefore usually assembled from the capital.
