Samarkand
The best-known city on the Great Silk Road. Its historic centre has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001 as “Samarkand — Crossroads of Cultures”.
What is worth seeing
Registan is an ensemble of three madrasahs (Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor and Tilya-Kori) facing a single square, and the city’s main landmark. Shah-i-Zinda is a row of mausoleums along a narrow street, known for its tilework.
Gur-e-Amir is the mausoleum where Amir Temur and his descendants are buried. The remains of the Ulugh Beg Observatory sit on the edge of the city and belong to 15th-century astronomy.
When it is easier to travel
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) bring moderate weather and long daylight. Summer days are hot, so excursions are usually scheduled for the morning and evening.
